Edisto Island

This is one of the many sea islands (barrier islands) that line the east coast all the way from Miami, Florida to Atlantic City, New Jersey.

On the way down highway 17 from Charleston this marker is placed to commemorate the Yamasee war.  The local native slaughtered the local whites.  Another link with more in depth description of the event

The local Museum sporting the Georgia flag even though we are still in South Carolina

A shell beach, A little breezy today, but sunny

Beaches like this are the source of tabby.  In the early 1700s they used this stuff to build forts.  They dug into the beach and cut out blocks of the calcium rich stuff and let it set into very hard yet absorbent blocks which could easily absorb the force of a cannon ball without shattering.

Here the oyster bed is dead.  I believe killed by the black mud.  I don't think it is petroleum based, just good old fashioned mud.  They call it pluff mud here.

Some local residents happy to see us.
