New Orleans AK (After Katrina)

At first thought it feels weird to want to tour the devastation of the Katrina Hurricane and aftermath.  But it was a once in a life time opportunity to see the effects of a category 4 hurricane.  Once we got there it was clear that the people of New Orleans are not at all offended.  They are happy that you would come and stay in hotels, eat in restaurants, etc.  They desperately need a return of the tourism that the city lived on.  We stayed in the French quarter just off Bourbon street which was not very damaged and paid just $40 per night.  2 years ago the room would have been $250.

This is Said From Lebanon.  For $20 an hour he toured us around the city and showed us how the flood happened and where.  He had to evacuate and got separated from his family who were traveling in a different car.  His family got funneled to Memphis while he was funneled to Houston.

The city is reopened where ever possible

Bourbon street still stinks to high heaven after a new of revelry.

Under all of the overpasses are lines and lines of cars.  Over 30,000 wrecks sitting and slowly being taken apart for what might be good.

Everywhere that there was flooding there are markings on the doors and building to document the rescue efforts.

The water line evident every where

Roofs take the brunt of the wind

This picture can't show the fact that for as far as you can see in every direction the streets are empty except for a few people attempting a comeback.  Most are resettled in other places like Houston and will not return.

The little brick bungalows faired much better, but all of the flooded houses are gutted of drywall and insulation to get rid of the mold.  Remember it was stinking hot during the flood and after.

Here someone ripped open the gable to get out of the attic.

My Truck, my truck.

Yeah, this is a story here.  The house drifted partly onto the street.  After the flood subsided, the bulldozers just carved off enough of the house to clear the street.

As we pull up you look directly into someone's life.

Ornaments still hang on the kitchen wall

Even the Nice homes are marked with the paint and gutted inside.

Doesn't matter that you're famous and a jazz ledgend.

This place is for sale an up down duplex $80,000 firm gutted and ready to rebuilt.

Next door others are already rebuilt and ready for tenants again.

Millions of dollars of toys

See the wheels up plane,  They don't fly well that way.
